*sigh* I'm beginning to think that there will be no end to the revamping of 'Evangelion'. The series itself has been tweaked and improved upon again and again. Now, they're releasing a series of four theatrical films that cram in the jist of the series and the film 'The End of Evangelion', change a few things, and add a few things. Hideaki Anno is still at the helm, fortunately. If I were him, I would have absolutely no objection to getting paid to dive into my precious brainchild again and again.
Anyone who knows me knows that 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' is my favorite, favorite story ever, movie, book, tv series, or whatever. So obviously, this development is hitting my squee button quite fervently. We watched this new 1.0 movie last night and enjoyed it very much in spite of the fact that it seems so rushed. The scenes that were reanimated were given a lavish treatment and absolutely blew me away. And the completely new scenes... *bounce* Even though this movie only touches upon the first six episodes or so, Kaworu Nagisa (who appears only in episode 24 of the series) is introduced in a most intriguing way.
Overall, I am pleased with what I've seen. Still, I would never recommend this to anyone who has not seen the full series. If you are looking to get into Eva, PLEASE watch the full run of the original series, complete with the director's cut episodes, AND 'The End of Evangelion' before you look into this one. Without the extensive character development the original series provides, I fear that these new movies will come across as uninvolving to the uninitiated. If you HAVE seen the original series, then by all means, WATCH THIS. :D It's a treat to the senses.
