I love horror films for many different reasons. Some of them are actually scary to me, some of them are a lot of fun, and some of them are just imaginative and awesome.
Surpassing all the catagories and making it onto my "short list" of alltime favorite movies is "Candyman", 1992, directed by Bernard Rose. It is incredible!
In the first catagory, almost all of my favorites are Japanese.
Favorite scary movies with the fright factor:
1. The Ring (or Ringu), 1998, directed by Hideo Nakata
2. The Ring 2 (or Ringu 2), 1999, directed by Hideo Nakata
3. Ring 0: Birthday (or Ringu 0: Basudei), 2000, directed by Norio Tsuruta
4. Pulse (or Kairo), 2001, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa
5. Jacob's Ladder, 1990, directed by Adrian Lyne
6. Juon: The Grudge, 2003, directed by Takashi Shimizu
7. Juon: The Grudge 2, 2003, directed by Takashi Shimizu
8. Halloween, 1978, directed by John Carpenter
9. Audition, 1999, directed by Takashi Miike
Favorite fun, imaginative, and awesome horror movies:
1. Hellraiser, 1987, directed by Clive Barker
2. House of 1000 Corpses, 2003, directed by Rob Zombie
3. Night of the Living Dead, 1968, directed by George Romero
4. Dawn of the Dead, 1978, directed by George Romero
5. The Evil Dead, 1981, directed by Sam Raimi
6. The Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, 1987, directed by Sam Raimi
7. Suspiria, 1977, directed by Dario Argento
8. Re-Animator, 1985, directed by Stuart Gordon
9. House on Haunted Hill, 1999, directed by William Malone
10. A Stir of Echoes, 1999, directed by David Koepp
11. The Thing, 1982, directed by John Carpenter
12. The Birds, 1963, directed by Alfred Hitchcock

*laugh* I love ze horror films! I know I probably forgot some others I love.
I also want to state for the record that I do NOT like the 'Saw' movies or the 'Hostel' movies. Poorly constructed torture porn doesn't do a thing for me. :P 'Audition' EARNS its torture scene. ;)
